Sorenson's Ranch Treatment Facility, nestled in the picturesque central Utah mountain country of Koosharem, provides a unique therapeutic and educational environment. Located at a 7,000-foot elevation, the ranch offers panoramic views of serene mountains adorned with Pinion Pine, Cedar, Quaking Aspen trees, and vibrant rock formations. The surrounding valley, three miles wide and 14 miles long, features five small canyon streams teeming with beaver ponds and trout, with diverse wildlife often seen in the area.
Clients engage in farming and animal care, which can be profoundly therapeutic for youth by fostering nurturing bonds, a sense of responsibility, and emotional healing. Our program setting supports a trauma-informed treatment philosophy, creating positive opportunities through various therapeutic approaches, educational experiences, and outdoor experiential learning. This helps build self-esteem, nurture appropriate behaviors, and teach responsibility. The calming and unfamiliar setting encourages clients to lower their defenses, creating a safe space for therapists and counselors to address previously unreachable issues.
Sorenson's Ranch emphasizes values of loyalty, respect, self-worth, personal management, organization, and integrity. The campus features a classroom complex, an industrial arts center with three shops, a gym, a fine arts classroom, a library, counseling offices, group rooms, a kitchen, an infirmary, a game room, animal/tack facilities, playing fields, hiking trails, barns, riding corrals, and a lodge with a multipurpose room for dining and activities.
Client housing consists of rustic cabins and dorms that complement the rural outdoor setting. Each room houses an average of four clients and includes connecting restrooms, allowing clients to personalize their space with their own effects. This homelike atmosphere promotes comfort and stability, essential for trauma recovery.
